The immediate physical presence of color is central to Katharina Grosse’s creative endeavor. Through an open-ended creative process in which painting takes on the form of a performance, color embodies movement, making its emotional potential tangible. These issues drive not only the artist’s dramatically large in situ works—painted across rooms, buildings, environments, and other surfaces in public places—but also her studio paintings, which have played an equally central role in her practice from the start.
Katharina Grosse Studio Paintings, 1988–2022 brings together 160 full-color plates and 38 supplemental images documenting the artist’s career-long studio practice. The first in-depth study of this aspect of Grosse’s work, the publication serves both as a reference book and as a critical exploration of the artist’s experiments with color and paint. Five essays and an insightful interview with the artist explore how Grosse expands the concept of painting on canvas by giving it an ephemeral character and removing the limitations of its traditional frame. The publication accompanies an exhibition, curated by Sabine Eckmann in collaboration with the artist, at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, the Kunstmuseum Bern, and the Kunstmuseum Bonn.
