Gary Tinterow, ed., Juan Gris, 1887–1927 (Madrid: Ministerio de Cultura, Banco de Bilbao, 1985), 443. This text reproduces a 1926 photograph of the artist’s studio in which WU 4131 is visible.
WU 4131 record card, Galerie Simon frame label, and October 3, 1962, letter from Galerie Louis Leiris to Richard Feigen, WU 4131 object file, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Washington University in St. Louis (hereafter referred to as WU 4131 object file). See also Douglas Cooper and Margaret Potter, Juan Gris: Catalogue raisonnée de l’ouevre peint v. 2 (Paris: Berggruen, 1977), 586. See also Christian Zervos, “Juan Gris et l’inquietude d’aujourd’hui,” Cahiers d’Art 1, no. 10 (1926): 271. In this article, all images—including the image of WU 4131—are credited to Galerie Simon. Galerie Simon was owned by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, an important dealer of modern art and an early champion of Cubism. Kahnweiler had previously run Galerie Kahnweiler, which closed in 1914. Galerie Simon was taken over by Kahnweiler’s stepdaughter Louise Leiris and renamed Galerie Louise Leiris in 1941 to circumvent antisemitic laws enacted by the Vichy regime.
Frame label, Pierre Matisse inventory number “C-562.” See also Galerie Simon “en commission” invoice for Pierre Matisse Gallery, September 25, 1935, Box 95, Folder 02, Pierre Matisse Gallery Archives, The Morgan Library & Museum, Department of Literary and Historical Manuscripts, New York, NY (hereafter referred to as Pierre Matisse Gallery Archives). See also Stock no. 523b in Pierre Matisse Gallery Purchase Book, 1932–1947, June 19, 1936, p. 12, Box 171, Folder 33, Pierre Matisse Gallery Archives. The Pierre Matisse Gallery was run by Pierre Matisse, the son of the artist Henri Matisse. Matisse was a prominent dealer of European and American modern and contemporary art.

Feigen number #1776-B, per WU 4131 object record. This was likely with Richard Feigen Gallery as a consignment, per September 28, 1962, letter from Eisendrath to Cooper, which describes Walter Maitland as the “present owner” even though the painting was with Feigen.
September 28, 1962, letter from Eisendrath to Cooper, WU 4131 object file. At this time, Eisendrath was acting as Yalem’s art advisor. In the letter he states that he advised Yalem to purchase WU 4131.
WU 4131 object file.
